Getting Paid Without Owning the Audience

The Take
These deals raise an important question about streaming economics: How much value can media companies capture from audiences they don't control?
Licensing windows, advertising rights, short-duration passes and distribution agreements can create profitable transactions from temporary demand. The financial opportunity depends on what the rights holder allows a company to sell and how much that transaction costs to deliver.
For streaming executives, that changes how rights should be valued, how acquisition should be measured and what constitutes a profitable customer.
A single provision in a rights agreement can determine whether a one-night viewer generates a positive return.

Shareholders of Fox, Roku Approve $22 Billion Takeover Deal
Shareholders of Fox Corporation and Roku have approved Fox’s proposed $22 billion acquisition of the streaming platform company, clearing another requirement for a transaction that remains under federal antitrust review.
The companies held separate special shareholder meetings Wednesday, where investors representing a majority of shares voted in favor of the deal. The companies are expected to disclose the final voting results in regulatory filings. Fox continues to anticipate completing the acquisition during the first half of 2027, although the transaction remains subject to government approval and other closing conditions.
Fox announced its agreement to acquire Roku in June, offering shareholders $160 per share through a combination of approximately $14.2 billion in cash and additional consideration consisting of Fox Class A common stock. The acquisition would give Fox control of Roku’s connected television operating system, streaming distribution business and digital advertising operations, substantially expanding the company’s presence beyond traditional television programming and distribution.
The transaction would also combine two major free, advertising-supported streaming businesses under common ownership: Fox’s Tubi and The Roku Channel. Both services offer television shows, movies and other programming without requiring paid subscriptions, generating revenue primarily through advertising. Roku’s television operating system and connected devices would also give Fox a larger role in how consumers discover and access subscription streaming services.
Federal regulators are continuing to examine the proposed combination. The U.S. Department of Justice has issued a second request for documents and information under antitrust laws, extending the government’s review of the acquisition. Under the law, the companies generally cannot complete the transaction until 30 days after they have substantially complied with the request, unless the waiting period is terminated earlier or otherwise modified.
The additional review creates uncertainty around the transaction’s closing date, although Fox has maintained its expectation that the acquisition will be completed during the first six months of next year. Shareholder approval does not resolve the antitrust questions being examined by federal regulators, who are reviewing the proposed combination before allowing the companies to proceed.

Peacock Fosters Daily Use, Fandom with Your Bravoverse Mobile Launch
NBCUniversal’s Peacock is offering fans a way to further engage and go down a personalized rabbit hole of decades of unscripted Bravo reality TV content, personalities and moments with the official launch of its Your Bravoverse mobile app feature and experience.
It’s the latest fan-focused feature for Peacock’s product roadmap and looks to serve a few different aims including boosting daily use and consumption of the SVOD, fostering new and deepening existing fandoms within its own app, making content discovery and the jump from short-form clips to long-form more seamless, and presenting new opportunities for brands.
Originally disclosed back in March and beta tested over the summer, the Your Bravoverse mobile app feature has now rolled out broadly to all subscribers. The experience serves up a personalized short-form vertical video feed of favorite Bravo moments, tailored to each fan, with moments connected and commentary shared along the way from a genAI avatar of Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen.
The short-form endless playlist experience allows users to swipe through different moments, storylines and reveals from across the franchise universe, including some never-before-seen content, friendships, dramas and receipts.
“Bravo fans never watch just one episode. They want the backstory, the receipts and what happened three seasons later,” said Andy Cohen in a statement, adding that Your Bravoverse is built just for that. “It’s a new way to go down every Bravo rabbit hole, rediscover iconic moments and find new ones based on what you love. Whether you’ve been watching for 20 years or you’re just tuning in, there’s always more to uncover. And now you have a version of me to guide you through it!”
For users, Your Bravoverse appears right on the home page of the Peacock mobile app.
It offers a vertical video scroll to explore personalized playlists of the latest buzzworthy moments alongside classic or fan-favorite scenes – spanning current and past seasons. Users can also dive deeper into a specific storyline or personality within the Bravo universe.

Plex, Fandango Link to Help Consumers Purchase Movie Tickets
Streamer Plex and online movie ticketer Fandango have announced an integration that creates a path from movie discovery to theatrical ticketing by allowing users to purchase tickets as they explore films on Plex.
Plex users in the United States can now see a Fandango ticketing option on title pages for movies currently playing in theaters, allowing them to click through to Fandango to find showtimes and purchase tickets. The integration also enables direct attribution through Kochava, giving studios and advertisers greater visibility into how campaigns and audience engagement translate into ticket sales.
Plex users make more than 100 million streaming decisions each month, with more than 45 million users creating watchlists, according to the services. Combined with search, ratings and cross-platform viewing, these signals give Plex insight into audience intent, while Fandango’s reach across 31,000 U.S. screens provides a direct path from discovery to ticket purchase.
“Our vision is to make Plex the place where people can discover what to watch, regardless of where that content lives. Fandango lets us extend that experience to all theatrical releases in the U.S., giving fans an easy way to act once they find a movie they want to see,” Scott Olechowski, chief product officer and co-founder at Plex. “For studios and advertisers, we’re also creating a more measurable path from discovery to purchase, helping marketers understand which campaigns are converting, so they can use those insights to make their media work harder.”
